Refridgerators...

Well, it finally happened, an appliance has died. Our fridge decided to stop making ice a long while ago. The cause of this appeared to be a broken valve, no big deal. Then, some time after the ice maker broke, the freezer decided to stop freezing things, and start melting them instead. Only chicken seems to be immune to this, as it seems to be staying frozen, and possibly actually freezing. Nothing else does this though, only the chicken...

Anyways, yesterday the guy from Trail Appliances came to fix the ice maker valve. When I told him about the freezer not freezing, he took a look inside and concluded that there was a leak in the refridgeration system, something that would cost ~$700 to fix. He then recommended that we buy a new fridge, and decided that it wasn't really worthwhile to fix the valve, since the ice wouldn' t freeze anyways. One good thing, he didn't charge us anything for the two service calls, probably saved me a couple hundred bucks there...

So, later that day we took a trip out to Trail with the intention of buying a new fridge. We found one in the clearance centre that looked pretty good, and was 15-25% off it's original price. It's actually pretty nice, and hopefully will more or less match the other appliances. It's getting delivered next Saturday, so we'll have to make do with the broken freezer until then, but that's not really a big deal, since we got a chest freezer in the basement about a month ago.
My discovery in all this, appliances are very expensive and fridges only last 10 years at best. I'm not sure how long stoves and dishwashers last, but I'm hoping it's at least a couple more years...

Dishwashers last until you tell her to get out of the house or until she dies :-)
